MANGALDAN – Different village officials in Pangasinan attended recently here the “First Integrity Barangay Forum” in the country sponsored by the Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman taught village chairmen, secretaries, and treasurers in the province about good governance and become a vanguard against corruption.
According to Bienvenida Gruta, Assistant Special Prosecutor 3 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the thrust of the road show is to make barangay officials partners of the Ombudsman in the development of human principles in the fight against corruption.
“These principles are accountability, transparency, responsiveness, and community participation, “she stressed.
The village officials come from the towns of San Manuel, San Jacinto, Manaoag, and this town who convened at the Macario Ydia Development Center (MYDC) here last November 9.
Gruta said the road show is sponsored by the United Nation Development Program (UNDP).
The second and third fora, she said, will be in the Visayas and in Mindanao.
She cited that the first road show caravan in Pangasinan was held simultaneously in the celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day in November 9.
Gruta said the Philippines is a signatory of the United Nation Convention Against Corruption.
The Ombudsman, headed by Gerard Mosquera Assistant Ombudsman for Luzon, not only educate the village officials about the salient features of Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, Code of Conduct of public officials, and other laws that relate to government officials but transform these officials as agent of change of human development in social services, clean and green environment, farm-to-market road, health, education, and others.
Gruta said the Ombudsman wanted to know the malpractices and corruption in these areas by putting the observation of these village officials at the data storage of the Ombudsman.
“Corruption rate of the country is very high, development is very low,” she said.
